2nd Price "Seniors Engagement for the World" for the working group European Contacts

The working group "European contacts" of ZAWiW, University of Ulm has received second prize (with an award of DM 4.000) for their engagement in European activities. It was epsecially noted, that the working group has been active in a variety of activities in the area of education, for example the organisation of international meetings and exchanges with senior students (Italy, France, Czech republic, Finland, Sardinia, etc.) whose goal is getting to know each other and the mutual exchange about the differing and common cultural backgrounds, the social position of seniors and the history and the future of Europa. Acknowledged were however also their other activities, for example help with the organisation of international conferences and participation in them as well as in ZAWiW's continuing education seminars. Within the frame work of "learning through research" a sub-group of the working group has carried out under the supervision of ZAWiW a social empirical study aboutn the Willy Brand Square in Ulm, whose transformations were closely connected to the developments in European history.

On the 1st of December 1999, the winners of the competition "International Engagement of Seniors - Partner Projects of Germans with Foreigners in the 3rd Age" were publicly honoured in the house of the National Sport Association in Berlin. The competition was supported by the national ministry for the family, seniors, women and youth and


the offie of the "International Year of Older People" and was organised by the Institute for Social Scientific Analysis and Consultancy in Köln (ISAB). From the 52 applicants from various association and groups from 14 German states, whose foreign partners came from 18 European and 3 non-European countries, the 10 judges have selected 8 price winners. The prizes between DM 6.000 (1st prize for the Social Services Berlin e.V.) and DM 1.000 were donated by sponsors. The prizes were given to the winners by the President of the national Sport Association Mr. Manfred von Richthofen, representatives of the ministry for the family, seniors, women and youth, of the Berlin senate, the jury ISAB, the sponsores, the EURAG, the National Chairman of the AG SPD 60 plus and a was carried in the festive atmosphere with many invited guests who are active in the area of seniors work. brigitte Trojahn, representative of the working group European Contacts and Annamaria Ferrara, President of the U3A Milano Duomo and representative of the foreign partners of the working group, have accepted the prize.
