Fascia Research Intensive: A Mentored Academic Internship at the Fascia Research Laboratory
Interest in the scientific discipline of fascia research has been steadily growing since the 1st Fascia Research Congress (Harvard Medical School, Boston, 2007). Relatedly, many professionals in fields such as physiotherapy, manual bodywork and osteopathy have been seeking to enhance their hands-on work with a more thorough understanding of fascia from a scientific perspective as well as gaining up to date knowledge on fascia research. The Fascia Research Group at the University of Ulm holds a prominent position in this field, both in Europe and worldwide. As a result, more and more people have been requesting the chance to improve their skills and deepen their knowledge by working with our research group; such continuing education would ideally involve both personal supervision and mentoring.
Goals
This continuing education opportunity will provide a select group of professionals with greater insight into the thought processes and working methodology of The Fascia Research Group. The intended outcomes are as follows:
- Participants will receive supervision by a specialist in the field. The content will match the individual needs and skill level of each participant.
- In addition the participants will be supported in continuing their studies on their own and to increase their understanding of international fascia research as well as strengthening their skills in scientific reasoning and methodology.
- Any negative impacts of this supervision on the ongoing research conducted by the Fascia Research Group will be minimal.
- The participants in the program are motivated and supported to subsequently pass on the knowledge gained within their area of professional expertise.
Choice of Research Theme
Usually the first 2-4 days of on-site time are devoted for developing a detailed project plan for the remaining weeks, including a detailed discussion of the best study questions in which we can support you. This will include looking at the best match between the personal skills and motivation of the participant on the one hand and the local research capacities and competencies of the Fascia Research Group on the other hand.
Selection Criteria
In the selection of candidates priority will be placed on the professional background and current level of knowledge of the applicants as well as their level of motivation. It is desirable that participants plan to continue working in the field, either in a teaching capacity or via continued research. Due to the special nature of this educational program, candidates who have already started with a PhD program or similar academic degree program at the University of Ulm or at another German or international university will not be allowed to participate.
Overview of the Course
We offer a tailored mix of “on-site” and “follow-up” work. Participants have three different packages (A, B and C) to choose from. There is also an additional package offered (D) as a way to further extend the program.
On-Site
- 4 days per week of work in at the university and the chance to make use of the fascia lab. During these days the participants will be personally mentored by a member of the Fascia Research Group, while also be expected to partially work/study on their own or within a small group of other research students.
- 1 additional day of literature review per week including the use of our extensive library (optional)
- Participation in bi-weekly Fascia Group meetings for research oriented exchange and collaboration
- Personal coaching of the participants concerning her/his planned research or other related project
