Cataloging

Head: Dipl.-Bibl. Sabine Kape-Sittler

The team's primary duty is to create bibliographic records of the Library's print and nonprint materials (books, journals, documents published on the Ulmer Volltextserver VTS, e-books, e-journals, non-book materials, and licensed databases) for both the SWB (Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Sachsen) and our local integrated library system aDIS/BMS. All journal holdings are also recorded in the ZDB, a specialized database for serial titles. Furthermore, you will find a list of our licensed electronic journals in the EZB (Electronic Journals Library). Documents published by University members can be found in our online catalog and the SWB Online-Katalog as well as on the Ulmer Volltext Server VTS.

This cataloging is based on internationally coordinated rules in the German-speaking area.

Catalogers are also responsible for assigning subject headings to a significant part of the Library's holdings. Material is then shelved by call number, which is taken from the LC (Library of Congress) and NLM (National Library of Medicine) classification schemes. For verbal subject indexing, we use the following subject index thesauri: LCSH, MeSH, and the GND (Subject Headings Authority File). By keeping up with the latest developments in cataloging, we are constantly enhancing catalog records and optimizing the different search functions of our online catalog.
Please contact our team if you have any questions concerning cataloging.
