Who We Are.
Web classic
With the service Web classic older excisting institutional websites on the webserver of the University of Ulm or personal or private homepages can be hosted. The websites are created offline as HTML files with any editor (e.g. Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft Frontpage) and are uploaded via SFTP into a directory on the webserver including image files if necessary. As access software which is used for creating, editing or deleting files within the www directoriy a SSH client has to be used. The proceedure is described as follows:
Homepages of institutes and departments
The service web classic can only be used for mainting already excisting old websites which aren't converted into the Content Management System
Web-CMS yet. New areas willl only be installed when there is a justified reason request for it (e.g. own PHP applications).
The address of the server which you have to log on with the SSSH client is: login.rz.uni-ulm.de
The WWW directory is usually found under
/soft/www/[...]
which is availabel from all UNIX workstations of the kiz. The exact pathname of the directory will be sent by the www administrator via e-mail. The www administrator has writing access (optional other peopl as well) to the directory and is able to upload files via SFTP. Important is that all files are readable for everyone worldwide. This can be achieved under UNIX using the command
chmod o+r [Dateiname]
The websites are available via a browser under following URL
the segment of the path [...] corresponds to the segment in the directory path. A query to this data range was already implemented when creating the directory, therefore no further actions are necessary.
An own server: Each institution is free to operate a www server on their own machines. A recommendable server software is Apache which is also used by the kiz to operate the university webserver. If you choose to operate an own server to host your official institute websites we still ask you to contact the webmaster so that we can keep an overview of all operated servers within the University of Ulm and also of all contact persons or persons in charge.
Personal (private) Homepages
Private information should most sensibly be published on a private homepage.
Condidtions:
- You have to have a personal Unix account on the server and workstations of the kiz. It may be neccessary to apply an account via the fullpackage account of the kiz. A further application is not required.
- Follow the instructions on the content of personal homepages (see below).
- For creating, editing or deleting a www directory use a SSH client as access software.
The address of the server where have to register with the SSH client is: login.rz.uni-ulm.de
After registrating you automatically find yourself in your UNIX homedirectory. To make sure you are in your homedirectory use the shell command "pwd". By using the shell command "cd ~" you can change into your homedirectory at any time.
Within the homedirectory you have to create a subdirectory with the exact name "public_html" in which you have to copy all websites. Enter following shell commands:
chmod +X ~
mkdir ~/public_html ~/public_html/cgi-bin
chmod 711 ~/public_html ~/public_html/cgi-bin
The homepage itself has to be named index.html. Your own CGI programs have to be stored in the directory "public_html/cgi-bin".
Contents of personal homepages
Homepages of societies or other organisations for which you are working in your free time are not allowed especially if the society or organisation is represented in the internet. The university respectively the kiz is not allowed to function as a free of charge content provider and compete with commercial internet service provider. An exception is only possible under the condition that the society, organisation or company signs a service contract with the kiz according to standard fees. In this case please contact the webmaster.
Make sure that your homepage violates the law. This includes material under copyright (e.g. images, maps, www templates, CGI codes) but also the content itself. For any violations you can be prosecuted.
