Distribution of telephone numbers & history

History

Until the startup of the current telephone system the telephone number range of the university was 0731-176, of the hospital 0731-179. In 1991 a new shared telephone system was introduced and the 0731-502 with 4-digit extension numbers became the shared telphone number range for the university, the university hospital, the university of applied science as well as the student services and the building authorities.

The 502 range was exhausted and the telephone number range 0731-503 was added. Thus the internal extensions became 5-digit phone numbers by adding the prefix '2' or '3'. A few years later the university hospital seperated itself and the hospital received an own telephone number range 0731-500. At the beginning of 2005 the 0731-501 telephone number range was ported from the FAW to the university.

Internal connections within the telephone system

The extensions of our telephone system have a 5-digit numbering in which the phone numbers within the network are always unique. For the user it doesn't matter whether the dialed extension is part of the university or university hospital. In any case the desired extension can be internally dialed with 5 digits and for free.

In most cases an extension line cannot be identified as a university number or wether it belongs to the university hospital. Only in some areas this is possible. Here the first digit of the phone number is important:

0 - exchange code digit
1 - reserved for the university administration
2 - shared by all attached institutions
3 - shared by all attached institutions
4 - hospital
5 - hospital administration
6 - internal system phone number (6-digital)
7 - patienten telephones
8 - link-up pager system, 70cm wireless etc.
9 - system phone numbers

Unlike the allocation of the phone number range regarding the connected institutions it is possible to roughly identify the location of the telephone connection. Here usually the first two or three digits are deciding. For instance all extensions beginning with 22 are located within the area of the univesity east while 264 is located within the university west and 283 is located in Böfingen.

Availability from the outside

All telephone numbers which are within the range 0731-500-00000 and  0731-50-39999 are forwarded on our telephone system. The switchboards are available from the outside via:

0731-500-0   Hospital
0731-50-10   University, Student Services
0731-50-208  Univeristy of Applied Sciences

All extensions of the university hospital have the prefix 0731-500 when calling from outside followed by the complete 5-digit phone extension.

For extensions of the university, the university of applied sciences, the student services and the building authority the first digit of the phone extension is omitted and the relevant phone number block 0731-502 or 0731-503 is chosen. To simplify the display for callers following spelling is used

0731.500-abcde  lines of the hospital
0731.50-abcde   lines of the university, university of applied sciences, student services, building authorities.

The first digit within the university telephone lines can only be following numbers: 1,2 or 3.

Intern the telephone switchboards are available via following numbers:

  • 99 (university)
  • 88 (hospital)
  • 77 (university of applied sciences)

Emergency telephone codes

At all phones following emergency numbers can be dialed:

Police 0-110 or 110
Fire brigade 0-112 or 112
Rescue coordination centre 0-112 or 112

Special phone extensions

DECT-Telephones

The numbers of the extensions of the cordless phones which are part of the DECT network of the university are fully integrated in telephone number range of the landline telephones and therefore the numbers have 5 digits as well.

IP-Telephones

Like the DECT phones the Siemens-IP-phones are integrated in the used number pattern using 5 digit phone extensions. A fixed VOIP range only exists for the test installation of a Linux-Voice-over-IP-System whose extensions start with 359.

Patient telephones

The phones of the patients have one fixed phone number and in addition each prepaid chipcard has a further phone number which is available depending on the currently used device and which so to speak a relaying number of the telephone. The patient gives away the number printed on the chip card.

Desired phone numbers and keeping the phone numbers when moving

In general it is not possible to get a certain desired phone number for conventional extensions. When allocating new extension numbers it is usually within the same phone number range as the other lines within the department. If this is not possible because all numbers within a certain range are already blocked another suitable phone number is given for the relevant extension.

When moving offices the old phone number can usually be kept if the relocation takes place within the same telephone system e.g. within the area of the university east or within the university west.
