VPN
A kiz-operated VPN gateway (VPN: Virtual Private Network) provides secure remote access (via external providers as well as company or university networks) to the campus network. In addition to enabling encrypted communication, another advantage is the utilization of online services which are normally only available for computers connected to the campus network. These services include access to licensed e-journals and ReDI databases.
Provided that a connection to the campus network has been established, each request sent to a service provider's server appears to come directly from a client computer on the campus network.
With both an installed Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client and a kiz basic account you will be able to connect to the gateway.
Software download und configuration
Due to license restrictions, the software may only be downloaded while on the campus network:
Windows
Mac OS X Power PC
Mac OS X i386
Linux 32bit
Linux 64bit
Windows Mobile CE- iPhone: visit the Apple App Store
If the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is not available for your operating system, we also offer the following as an alternative:
Setting up a connection
Please see our
tutorial for how to connect via VPN. Establish a connection with the University's VPN server and log on with your kiz basic account.
If you encounter the messages "certificate error" or "Untrusted VPN Server Blocked", do not under any circumstances accept it and notify our Help Desk about this error immediately (VPN-Clients with Linux please see the following Advice).
With Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and newer versions (and maybe some other distributions also) the certificate verification doesn't work. You can handle this by replacing the directory /opt/.cisco/certificates/ca with a symbolical link to /etc/ssl/certs (as an alternative just copy all files from /etc/ssl/certs to /opt/.cisco/certificates/ca). If this also doesn't work please contact our Helpdesk.
To terminate the connection, right click the VPN icon in the taskbar and select "Disconnect".
