Unix Server

The kiz provides a number of server for an interactive login which partially run under Solaris and partially run under Linux. On these machines a number of standard programs (e.g. StarOffice and mozilla) as well as special applications can be used.

On all machines an interactive login is possible if your user account was activated for this ("full package of the kiz"). You can either use a text base surface via Secure Shell (SSH) or use a graphic base surface via X-Windows programe (e.g. X-Win 32). Within the graphic surfaces you have the choice between different Window managers (CDE, Gnome 2.0).

As the adress for the login the generic adress is usually used:

login.rz.uni-ulm.de

It is also possible to directly login to certain machines. This should happen only in exceptional cases. In this cases please use following address:

[hostname].rz.uni-ulm.de

In all machines software packages are activated when choosing option packagename which are not automatically setup. The command options provides a list of the packages which have to be activated before the first use. An overview and description of the installed (UNIX-)software can be found on our website under Software.

On all machines your UNIX homedirectory is automatically mounted.
