Access Requirements

In order to use the Library's licensed electronic resources, a campus network IP address is required. You can connect to the network via landline or Wi-Fi (off campus via VPN).

Alternatively, access to a growing number of resources is now available via Shibboleth. This authentication/authorization system grants the library user access to licensed resources, such as e-journals, databases, and e-books, from outside the University network. Simply login via EZB, DBISReDI, or directly via the service provider's website (publishing house, scientific society, etc.). If you encounter the terms Athens or DFN/AAI in a login context, they also refer to a Shibboleth login functionality.

How to login via Shibboleth:

  1. Select the correct location (Ulm) and institution (University of Ulm)
  2. The kiz login screen will appear
  3. Enter your kiz account e-mail address and password

Login is only for users with a kiz account.

kiz Licenses

kiz Licenses

Through kiz, the University purchases subscription databases, e-journals, and e-books for its authorized users. For the most part, these are one-year subscriptions. See above for access information. In addition, access is provided to resources financed by other institutions (i.e. ReDI databases [state of Baden-Württemberg] or national licenses [DFG]) and free databases on the Internet (i.e. EZB journals with a green light).

ReDI Licenses

ReDI Licenses

ReDI is a consortium of research libraries in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Its objective is to provide effective and cost-efficient access to sources of scientific information. As a consortium partner, the University of Ulm offers a selection of databases including Web of Science, Embase, Biosis, TEMA Technik und Management (former FIZ Technik), WISO, Psyndex, LexisNexis, Beck Online etc. Authorized users (see above) have access via DBIS.

DFG National Licenses

DFG National Licenses

Since 2004, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has been promoting research at German universities, research institutions, and research libraries through the financing of national licenses for digital publications. The aim is to improve nationwide access to scientific electronic resources, such as databases, electronic journals, and e-books covering all academic fields. The individual products are listed in the respective library information system (DBIS, EZB, and local library catalogs) or can be found at the DFG's website: Nationallizenzen.

At this time, eight institutions have established nationwide licensing agreements with professional associations, publishers, and other information providers.
