Dynamic changes in markets such as globalization, increasing competition, dynamic customer needs, game changers and the increasing complexity of products and technologies are decisive challenges for companies. The key to success is a long-term and forward-looking corporate orientation, combined with the successful implementation of the operating business. Therefore, companies have to deal with the future, understand the present, and learn from the past.

The module Business Analytics Drives Innovation provides a solution for these issues. Participants will be taught the basic techniques of business analytics in order to derive emerging technologies, new products, services, business models or process innovations. The learning goals are primarily aimed for the areas of technology foresight, company development as well as customer and product management. Results will be evaluated individually and will be used to optimize internal business processes. You will have the possibility to exchange ideas with employees of other companies and discuss challenges, different approaches and possible solutions.

In addition to the presentation and discussion of analytical techniques, the participants will be able to apply selected applications in a specific manner as well as understand and select the underlying databases. The module is divided into three parts of "Business Analytics Drives Innovation":

  • Innovation by Technology Push,
  • Innovation by Market Pull and
  • Innovation by Digital Model.

Unlike other modules that focus on business analytics, we use analytics techniques to generate innovations and not to develop industry 4.0 applications (for example predictive maintenance). These fields of applications are still quite new and they are getting increasingly popular in industries and the public sector.

The course is especially designed for professionals responsible for technology foresight, business development, business strategy as well as costumer and product management.

Contents of the module

  • Innovation by Technology Push: Technology and Innovation Management (TIM), individual cases. Scout for future innovation and technology fields using analytical applications.

  • Innovation by Market Pull: Product and Portfolio Management (ProMM), competitors and customer analytics, individual cases. Optimize your product portfolio using customer analytics.

  • Innovation by Digital Models: Agile strategy design for digital transformation.

     

Learning goals

In Break-Out-Sessions you will get to know TIM Analytics Techniques, you will apply them to your individual case to find new fields of technology and innovation.

You will learn which technology and innovation fields are relevant and how to anticipate trends and foresight technology.

You will get to know ProMM Analytics Techniques, you will apply them to your individual case to optimize your product portfolio.

You will learn how to study your costumers as well as competitors and to position your products in the right way.

You will get to know the method “Agile Strategy Design for Digital Transformation” and you will be enabled to develop a digitalization strategy for your company.

Learning setting

Online-learning takes place as self-study units as well as group assignments. For structuring the self-study-part, videos that illustrate the contents and an elaborated script are provided. According to the didactic concept of Ulm University, the script is developed especially for students that work full-time while studying. The script contains learning stops, multiple and single choice tests, quizzes, exercises, etc.

Your mentor will offer online seminars in periodic intervals, which will help you to handle the exercises and to work on the learning matters. An online forum for an exchange with the other students will also be available.

Technical Requirements for E-Learning

Minimum requirements:

  • A desktop computer or notebook, with Windows 7 or more recent, Linux or OS X 10.9
  • Current version of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer (11 or more recent)
  • Current version of Adobe Flash Plugin in the browser (needed only for online-consultation hours and online-webinars)
  • Access to the internet via xDSL, Cable, LTE or with a minimum of 1 Mbit/s for downstream and 128 kbit/s for upstream (“DSL 1000”)

Recommended requirements:

  • A desktop computer or notebook, with Windows 7 or more recent, Linux or OS X 10.9, alternatively: up-to-date smartphone or tablet with an android or iOS system
  • Current version of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, IE11 (or more recent)
  • Current version of Adobe Flash Plugin in the browser (needed only for online-consultation hours and online-webinars)
  • Access to the internet via xDSL, Cable, LTE or with a minimum of 6 Mbit/s for downstream and 576 kbit/s for upstream (“DSL 6000”)

Activity confirmation

In order to be granted admission to the exam (written or oral) you have to meet the following requirements:

  • Participation in at least 2 on-campus days
  • Work on compulsory online material

In case of hardship the candidate can write a formless request that is to be examined by the professor responsible for the module.

In case of sickness at the day of examination, a doctor’s certificate has to be submitted to the professor responsible for the module.

Certificate

After finishing the module successfully, you will get a certificate and a supplement, which will list the contents of the module and the competences you have acquired. The supplement confirms the equivalent of 6 credit points (ECTS).

Study fees

The fee for participating in the module “Business Analytics Drives Innovation” is 1.320 Euro.
