Course: Computational Methods in Materials Science

Part 1: Introduction to the Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

The UZWR gives one of three parts of the joint lecture "Computational Methods in Materials Science".  This part consists of three lectures and is a basic introduction to the finite element method (FEM) together with three computer labs about the usage of the commercial FE package ANSYS.

The course takes place each winter term.

Lecturers

Dr. Ulrich Simon, Dipl.-Inf. Frank Niemeyer, Dipl.-Ing. Malte Steiner
(Prof. Herr and Prof. Krill are the lecturers of the other two parts)

Participants

For Students of International Master of Advanced Materials Science.

Lectures

  1. Introduction into basic mechanical concepts and terms
  2. Introduction into the FE theory, very simple example
  3. Material laws and properties
Handout of slides used for lectures (winter term 2011/12)

Computer Labs

The labs will take place in Linux pool 10, room 45.2.104 each Thursday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Topics of the first three labs are:

  1. Getting started with ANSYS. Example: Beam bending
  2. ANSYS scripting, mesh control and performing an automated convergence analysis
  3. Complex material models

Lab Report

For this first part of the course regarding the FEM, students will be asked to perform one lab report together in groups of up to three students

  • This lab report is home work and consists of
    • a simple experiment,
    • an analytical calculation and
    • an FE simulation of the experiment.
  • Results should be presented in one written report (PDF) for each group.
  • Reports should be sent by e-mail to me (ulrich.simon) (due date see in the instructions).
  • Please include the e-mail addresses of all other members of the group in CC
  • Initiates file downloadFE-Lab-Report-2012.pdf (with detailed instructions)
