As dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, I would like to welcome you to our homepage. With about 45 professorships, our faculty comprises the fields of electrical engineering, computer science and the recently added field of psychology. This somewhat unusual combination of subjects, which is the only one of its kind in Germany, is the result of a new and important faculty research focus Cognitive Technical Systems and Human-Computer Interaction. With the growing complexity of technical devices and systems, it is becoming increasingly important that humans can operate them intuitively, an aim which requires close cooperation between engineers, ergonomists and psychologists.

The Faculty’s other research focuses include: Adaptive Software-Intensive Systems, Sensor Technology and Signal Processing, Microwave and High-Frequency Systems and Technologies, Semi-Conductors and Nanomaterials.

It goes without saying that we provide our students with a broad methodological basis, rather than mere factual knowledge. This enables our students to find answers to newly arising questions, some of which may not even yet be known. Here current research results flow into our broad education, an aspect that is typical for a university setting. As a small university, we offer an excellent ratio of students to instructors, especially in the technical subjects. The fact that we belong to the top group of faculties, despite our size, can be seen in the Wissenschaftsrat (German Council of Science and Humanities) 2011 ranking list: the University of Ulm’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Programme was rated particularly strong in research, placing us in a group with RWTH Aachen, TU Munich and KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). It is certainly a wise decision to study in our faculty or participate in a research cooperation project with us. I hope you enjoy browsing through our website.

Yours sincerely

Prof Dr-Ing Klaus Dietmayer,

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science
