Pupils do BOGY internship at DBIS institute

Ulm University

What is the daily business of computer scientists (with minor in media) and what is their area of activity? Which industries actually need graduates of this occupation and what are the qualifications a student need to show for an employment? How do the studies of computer science at Ulm University look like? In the scope of a one-week BOGY internship, two pupils of the local Humboldt high school - Jan (16) and Lukas (15) - went further into those and a lot of further questions. During their internship, they had been supervised by Opens internal link in current windowJohannes Schobel, M.Sc. in particular, and by the entire DBIS team.

Overall, Jan and Lukas could gain exciting insights into topics like Human-Computer Interaction, mobile app development, gesture based interaktion with devices (e.g., Microsoft Pixelsense), Augmented Reality, editing of multimedia content (images, audio, video) and Robotics. Besides technical challenges like the development of an autonomic cleaning roboter based on Lego Mindstorms or the design of a dedicated internship website, the pupils also attended several lectures, joined some project meetings and conducted some interviews with staff members as well as students. In summary, Jan and Lukas had really enjoyed their internship at our institute and commited themselves to visit us again any time soon.

Background: The internship of Jan and Lukas is part of the career guidance (called BOGY) taking place at German high schools. BOGY is supposed to help pupils in getting insights into different occupations, studies, apprenticeships as well as their conditions of admission. Thereby, pupils can become more clear about their wishes, skills, talents, and goals regarding their professional careers.
