Before Departure:

  1. Do you need a visa?
    Don't travel to Germany with a tourist visa, if you stay in Germany longer than three months! It is not possible to convert a tourist visa into a student visa after arrival in Germany!
  2. Do you have a valid identity card/passport?
  3. Where will you live?
  4. Do you have sufficient knowledge of the German language? (only in German)
  5. Which attestations do you need for applying at Ulm University?
  6. What about your health insurance in Germany?
  7. What kind of study do you want to select: BSc., MSc. in German or MSc. in English?
  8. If you have chosen a study subject (BSc., MSc. in German or MSc. in English) you need to apply for it (only in German).

  9. Do you have enough money?  From the first days of arrival you will have a lot of expenses:
    • lease (300 €)
    • lease deposit (3 * monthly leases)
    • health insurance (monthly 70 €)
    • semester fee (123,50 € administration costs + student service contribution)
    • fees for the aliens registration authority (100 €)
    • poss. bedclothes or cost for room facilities (100 - 150 €)
    • when you open your bank account, purchase a bank or EC card (20 €)
    • living expenses

Before you apply to a German university you should be aware that in principle you have to live on your own personal funds or scholarship. Regardless of your future status at the university it is never be a guarantee that you will get a job to support yourself during your stay because the student jobs also depend on the indeed employment situation or you have not enough time for a job during your study.

Ulm University offers for all future students a possibility to improve or refresh their mathematical knowledges and carries out a "Universitäts-Trainingscamp" ("university training camp") in German.

Before the semester starts, the student councils and student unions of Ulm University offer for all freshers an introduction programm (only in German). The program is called FUESE and Fach-ESE ("subject spanning" and "subject specific" fresher introduction). Through these events you could get useful information for your studies and also have possibilities to make initial contacts.

The International Office carries out an Orientation Program short time before the semester starts.
Furthermore you can apply for the Buddy Program of the International Office.


Documents You Have to Bring to Ulm/Neu-Ulm:

  • official admission letter of the university
  • original certificates of your qualification for admission to higher education and certified translations in German or English
  • if available: originals or certified copies of degrees and courses from your home university in German or English. If the testimonials are not in German or English, the certified translations are required.
  • confirmation that you have a monthly amount of approximate 670 € at your disposal (e. g. confirmation of a scholarship, confirmation of your parents, original bank documents, traveler's cheques etc.)
  • language testimonials (the english speaking Msc. study courses have thier own language requirements)
  • valid identity card/passport
  • if necessary, your visa 
  • several passportsize photographs
  • proof of a health insurance in Germany (EU)
  • vaccination card
  • birth certificate
  • if necessary, an international driving license or a German translation of your driving license.
