Excursions Summer Term 2012

Strasbourg, Trier & Völklingen Ironworks

Thursday, April 12th - Saturday, April 14th 2012

Strasbourg is the capital of France’ eastern province Elsass and with is 640 000 inhabitants (including agglomeration areas) also the biggest city of the region.
Beside its importance within Europe and the European Union today – Strasbourg is seat of numerous European institutions such as the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Court of Human Rights, the city on the banks of the Ill is famous for its more than 2000-year-old history.
The city of Trier situated in western Rhineland-Palatinate is looking back on a history even longer than Strasbourg. It is known to be the oldest city of Germany, founded in or before 17 BC. The townscape is decisively determined by the Roman historic architectural monuments which count since 1986 to the UNESCO-world cultural heritage.

The last station of the excursion is a visit of the Völklingen Ironworks, former ironwork founded in 1873 in Saarland. In 1994 it was delared by the UNESCO as the first industrial monument of the world in the rank of a world cultural heritage. Today, the Völklingen Ironworks is a museum, where numerous exhibitions and installations take place. Visitors can tour the former production areas as well as visit the Ferrodrom, an interactive science center focusing on the making of iron. The Völklingen Ironworks belongs to the most important locations of the industrial culture in Europe and is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Leipzig & Dresden

Saturday - Monday, October 02 - 04, 2010

October 3 is the German national holiday, the Day of German Unity. In 2010, this holiday is celebrated for the 20th time. Therefore, this year’s October excursion will lead to Leipzig and Dresden, two major cities in the east of Germany, in the area of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Leipzig became well-known for the Monday demonstrations which paved the way for the peaceful revolution, which finally led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German re-unification. During baroque times, Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Leipzig and worked with the world-famous boys’ choir of St. Thomas Church.

Dresden, has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the electors and kings of Saxony and is now again the capital of the German Free State of Saxony. There are many reknown historical buildings from the renaissance and baroque period.  The city was almost completely destroyed during World War II. Furthermore, urban development during the 40 years of socialist government changed the face of the city. However, restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic city, including the famous Semperoper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche.

Fee:              € 60 (includes: bus transfers, guided city tours and group visits, overnight-stay at youth hostel with breakfeast. Other meals & drinks as well as individual visits to sights are not included.)

Sign-up:       at the International Office Help Desk until September 20, 2010. You will receive a bank form and must return proof of payment no later than September 21 to the International Office after you have deposited the money at Sparkasse or made a transfer from your bank account.
