ERASMUS as Part of the Lifelong Learning Program (LLP)
The university program ERASMUS epitomizes one of the great success stories of the European Union facilitating and advancing transnational academic mobility since 1987. So far, over 1.5 million students and more than 100.000 university teachers have participated in a study abroad / teaching abroad through ERASMUS.
Having become integrated into the EU’s "Lifelong Learning Program" (2007-2013), ERASMUS enters its next phase. The new ERASMUS program promotes:
Study abroad periods and
work placements abroad for students
Teaching abroad periods for academic staff
Training periods abroad for university staff at higher education institutions and enterprises
ERASMUS intensive programs
Universities and other academic institutions as well as ERASMUS student internship agencies can apply for fundings at the German academic exchange service (DAAD), acting as a so-called national ERASMUS agency commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Individuals may not issue an application at this level.
In order to receive DAAD fundings, universities must have successfully applied for an ERASMUS University Charter (EUC) with the European Commission. In order to exchange students, teachers and other staff, the cooperating institutions must sign bilateral agreements in advance.
Students or staff with special needs are eligible to apply for additional grants.
