Information about Residence Permit for Researchers

Ulm University is a research institution officially recognized by the "Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge" (BAMF = "Federal Office for Migration and Refugees") to participate on the proceedings after § 38a Abs. 1 "Aufenthaltsverordnung" (residence regulation). Consequently, application for residence permit according to "§ 20 AufenthG" is simplyfied for foreign researchers (PhD students, Post-Docs, Private Lecturer etc.).

To apply for a residence permit according to § 20 AufenthG you need the following documents (in addition to lease contract, certificate of residency, certificate of health insurance, work contract etc.): 

1. Information about the Aufnahmevereinbarung/Hosting agreement (web page of the BAMF)
    Aufnahmevereinbarung /Hosting agreement (German and English)
    Instructions (German)

If necessary, the Kostenübernahmeerklärung/Declaration of Assumption of Costs from researcher department has to be filled in (they also have to send it to the ministry).

2. Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Zweck der Forschung ("residence permit for the purpose of research")
