Health Insurance
- All students in Germany must have a health insurance (from a private or a public health insurance company). Without valid health insurance you cannot matriculate at any university in Gemany!
- Students are eligible for a student public health insurance. Since April 1, 2011, the monthly rates are 76,41 € (458,46 € per semester at the University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm) who have not yet attained the age of 23 and else 77,90 € (467,40 € per semester at the University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm).
- Exceptions:
- Students who have attained the age of 30
- Students who have already completed their 14th semester
- Doctoral students
Students From Countries Which Have a Social Security Agreement With Germany
Students from EU countries and from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Tunesia, Turkey and former Yugoslavian countries do not need to take a health insurance policy in Germany. They only need to bring proof of health insurance cover taken in their home countries. Get an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) from your insurance company.
Students who Have Private Health Insurance at Home Which They Want to use Here
Students with private insurance from their home country need to bring a confirmation in English or German stating that it covers all costs in case of medical treatment. With this document they can choose any public health insurance and ask for exemption from the obligatory German health insurance. A travel insurance is not sufficient for this purpose.
Public Health Insurance Companies
There are various public health insurance companies in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. You can freely select any health insurance.

Private health insurance
If you are older than 30 years or you started already with the 15. „Fachsemester“ (terms of study) then you have to take a private health insurance or to take a “voluntary insurance” by a public health insurance (the rate of contribution is higher than in a student insurance). The rates of private health insurances are calculated individual and vary very strong.
Students from EU/EWR countries with a private health insurance from their home countries have to submit a certification of their health insurance. In case of illness they have to pay all medical payment and medicine in Germany. Adjacent they have to deduct the cost with their health insurance in their home countries.
Advantageous private health insurances you can find in this internet pin boards (only in German):

www.test.de (PKV-344-Tarife-im-Test, 2006, free of charge)

Private travel- or emergency insurances are NOT ACCEPTED. Maybe they are necessary for the application of a Visa but they are not accepted for enrolment or “Ausländerbehörde” (alien registration authority)
