Busses and Trams (Ding - SWU)

Ulm und Neu-Ulm have a very well developed public transportation system. The SWU (Stadt Werke Ulm; the company, that runs the municipal bus and tram lines), several companies from the region and the Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) have joined their service to form the DING (Donau Iller Nahverkehrs Gesellschaft).  Within the DING area (which reaches out almost 50 km into the surrounding of Ulm) you can use different companies and means of transportation with only one ticket. The DING Area is divided into several zones (Waben). The price of a ticket differs, depending on how many zones you will touch or cross. The whole city area of Ulm and Neu-Ulm forms one zone (Wabe 10/20) with standard prices.
There are also night-busses in Ulm, which operate the whole night before Saturday and Sunday and before holidays. They are free of charge for students of Uni Ulm, HS Ulm and FH Neu-Ulm.

Semesterticket

The semester ticket is valid within the whole DING area for the duration
of a full semester. The price is 76 Euro per semester. All registered students
of the Universität Ulmare entitled to buy it. In winter term it is valid from Oct 1 to Mar 31, in the summer term from Apr 1 to Sep 30.

You can buy your semester ticket at

Auch der Studentenausweis alleine ist ohne Semesterticket als Fahrschein gültig, Werktags ab 19 Uhr und das ganze Wochenende auf allen Linien im DING-Gebiet.

Your semester ticket is not transferable and only valid together with your student ID Card.

Keep the receipt when buying your semester ticket. In case you loose your semester ticket you can get a new one from the SWU office “traffiti” for a small fee.

It is worthwhile to buy the semester ticket after the semester has already started, if you will be using it for at least three months.

With your student ID you can travel after 7 p.m. on weekdays and the whole weekend on busses and trains in the whole DING area. This applies only to the chip card student ID. Taxi

Taxis in Germany are rather expensive. However, if you share a taxi
with your friends who have the same destination, it might be a good
bargain for you. A ride from the inner city to the Universität Ulm or to
other distant parts of the city will be about 10 to 15 Euro.

For a taxi, just call:
Taxizentrale Ulm: 0731/66066 or
Taxizentrale Neu-Ulm: 0731/77000

A cheaper alternative to normal taxis is the "Taxi Ulmerle", which has to be ordered in advance by phone 0731/14060606 or Internet
