Research in Epidemiology

The word epidemiology stems from the greek words epi "upon", demos "people" and logos "doctrine". While the physician is taking care of individual patients, epidemiology looks at the ill as a part of the population. Epidemiologic research investigates the distribution, the causes and the consequences of healthproblems and their determinants within populations.

Epidemiologic research provides physicians and patients with answers to theirquestions on diagnostic and therapeutic processes. The supply of data ondeterminants of disease leads to recommendations for preventive measures. These can be applied on individual level as well as on a political or population level.
