Born and raised in Bochum, Michael Martin studied History, Pedagogy and economic history at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. 1994 he graduated as M.A. and 2001 he receives a doctor's degree at  the Ruhr-University Bochum with a task concerning occupational health in mining. From 1995 to 2004 he worked as scientific assistant at the chair of the History of Medicine at the Ruhr- University of Bochum as well as at the "Foundation Museum Schloss Moyland". That followed, he was employed as scientific assistant at the Heinrich -Heine University of Düsseldorf. There, he took part in the DGF-Projects "Die Frames und Funktionalbegriffe der Harndiagnostik in ihrer Entwicklung seit der frühen Neuzeit" and "Darstellung als Problem und Promotor medizinische Diagnostik". Since 2009 he works as scientific assistant at the Institute of the History, Theory and Ethics in Medicine at the University of Ulm.
