Exemptions
Please note: the following information is only valid for students in bachelor or state exmanination programs or in consecutive master programs. For information about tuition fees in the non-consecutive master programs Advanced Materials, Communications Technology, Energy Science and Technology and Finance please check the

The following persons are not subject to fees
- Students on academic leave, as long as the application for leave is submitted before the semester commences
Information on academic leave - Students in the block work placement of the teacher certification programme; the semester following the block work placement is generally exempt.
Verification: confirmation of work placement - Students in their practical year; the maximum exemption is two semesters. So-called "learning semesters" between the practical year and the second state examination are subject to fees.
The following persons are exempt upon application
- Students who are caring for and raising a child which is under fourteen years of age upon commencement of the respective semester (01.10. or 01.04.). In order for an exemption to be granted, the child must be born before the beginning of the academic term.
Verification: birth certificate; where appropriate, adoption certificate or certificate of approval; and confirmation of registration from the Registration of Address Office (Einwohnermeldeamt), stating that the child shares a home with you. - Students whose two or more siblings are currently not exempt from paying tuition fees after this regulation (§ 6 Abs.1 S. 2 LHGebG)
Verification: applicant's birth certificate as well as siblings' birth certificates and confirmation from the universities of paid tuition fees - bank statements do not count! - Students who have a disabiliy in the sense of § 2 Act Nine of the Social Security Act (§ 2 Neuntes Buch Sozialgesetzbuch) which severely affects their ability to study.
Verification: disabiliy ID in accordance with § 69 Social Security Act (Sozialgesetzbuch) IX. With a disability of 50% or less, a medical certificate regarding the severe effects of the disabiliy on the student's ability to study is also required. With chronic illnesses, a medical certificate concerning the existence and type of the illness and the severe effects it has on the student's ability to study. - Students who spend a semester at a university abroad
Verification: Certificate of enrolment issued by the university abroad
Upon application,
- students with severe hardships can be granted a deferment or exemption. A severe hardship does not exist if students have the option of taking out a loan or if they are no longer entitled to take out a loan due to their past.
The Executive Committee will decide on the fulfilment of these requirements on an individual basis.
Other circumstances granting exemption
- Students who are participating in a combined honours programme are only required to pay tuition fees once.
- Students who are enrolled in two universities pay tuition fees at the university where the focus of their studies is.
- Foreign students who are enrolled under agreements at a federal, state or international level (Socrates / Erasmus) or under university agreements guaranteeing fee exemption.
Applications for fee exemption should be submitted prior to commencement of the re-registration period and must be submitted by commencement of the semester at the latest. Applications for exemption submitted after commencement of the semester can no longer be approved.
