It was shown how a pre-processing step that extracts local landmarks from a planning domain and problem description can be used in order to prune the search space that is to be explored before the actual search is performed. This pruning technique eliminates all branches of the task decomposition tree, for which can be proven that they will never lead to a solution. In this paper, we investigate this technique in more detail and extend it by introducing search strategies which use these local landmarks in order to guide the planning process more effectively towards a solution. Our empirical evaluation shows that the pre-processing step dramatically improves performance because dead ends can be detected much earlier than without pruning and that our search strategies using the local landmarks outperform many other possible search strategies.}, tags = {SFB-TRR-62,Planning}, url = {http://www.uni-ulm.de/fileadmin/website_uni_ulm/iui.inst.090/Publikationen/2010/Elkawkagy10LandmarksInHybrid.pdf}, web_url = {http://www.uni-ulm.de/fileadmin/website_uni_ulm/iui.inst.090/Publikationen/2010/Elkawkagy10LandmarksInHybridSlides.pdf}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 25th PuK Workshop ''Planen, Scheduling und Konfigurieren, Entwerfen'' ({PuK} 2010)}, author = {Elkawkagy, Mohamed and Bercher, Pascal and Schattenberg, Bernd and Biundo, Susanne}, note = {Online Proceedings} } @inproceedings{Elkawkagy10LandmarksInHTN, title = {Landmarks in Hierarchical Planning}, year = {2010}, pages = {229--234}, abstract = {In this paper we introduce a novel landmark technique for hierarchical planning. features based on voice-activity detection. It takes as input a vector of values extracted from conversational speech and predicts turn-taking activity and active-listening patterns using an echo-state network. We observed evidence of frame-attunement using a measure of speech density which takes the ratio of speech to non-speech behaviour per utterance. We noted a synchrony of utterance timing and modelled this using the ESN. The system was trained on a subset of data from 100 telephone conversations from the 1,500-hour JST Expressive Speech Processing corpus, and predicts the interlocutor's timing behaviour with an error-rate of less than 15% based on one partner's speech-activity alone. An integrated system with access to content information would of course perform at higher rates. Our work is grounded on the results of subjective speech quality tests conducted in our lab and recent studies in this field. The test experiments do not only quantify the impact of network delay on speech quality as perceived by untrained subjects. They also assess the mutual influences between conversational interactivity (CI) and delay using three different conversation scenarios. Our results show a clear positive correlation between the level of conversational interactivity and interlocutors' delay sensitivity. Another key finding is that even in contexts of high interactivity, one-way delay values up to 400 ms did not have any significant impact on untrained participants' perception of overall speech quality. Furthermore, we examine the surface structure of participants' conversations across a wide range of delay conditions (up to 1600 ms). Our analysis demonstrates how additional metrics such as unintended interruption rate (UIR) can be successfully used to determine the surface structure and delay sensitivity of a conversation.}, Author = {Egger, Sebastian and Schatz, Raimund and Scherer, Stefan}, Booktitle = {Proceedings of Interspeech 2010}, Date-Added = {2010-09-10 13:52:22 +0200}, Date-Modified = {2011-02-09 14:59:29 +0100}, Keywords = {stefan s.}, Pages = {1321--1324}, Publisher = {ISCA}, Title = {It Takes Two to Tango - In LDLT, a healthy individual offers a substantial part of his or her liver (up to 60\%) for the benefit of a terminally-ill recipient. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify decision-making and risk-assessment patterns of living liver donors and assess whether the principles of informed consent and decision autonomy are being met. METHOD: The authors conducted semistructured clinical interviews with 28 donors before transplantation. RESULTS: The authors found that a decision was being reached before a decision-making process could take place. Surgery risks were perceived and processed in different ways, including the factors of risk-awareness, denial, limited acceptance, and fatalism. It is shown how the visual features motion, disparity, and form that are represented in a distributed way in areas V1, V2, and MT mutually interact at several levels. Thus, their information is shared without the need of explicit neural representation for each combination of features. In particular, we address the issue of 2D extrinsic motion cues generated at occlusions that have to be treated differently than 2D intrinsic motion features of the same object. We suggest that here information of the form channel, namely the indication of a junction, is necessary to achieve a correct percept in the motion pathway. Furthermore, we investigated the question of how a percept of either pattern or component motion is generated in a scenario of moving bars that only differs in the presence or absence of occlusions, like in the chopstick and the barberpole display. We propose different roles for various kinds of MT cells that are involved in the interactions with the form pathway, simulating purely integrative cells tuned to motion and to motion and stereo, but also contrast cells responding strongly when motion in the surround is in the opposite direction. The model simulations reproduce psychophysical and neurophysiological results of the chopstick as well as of the barberpole illusion. When communicating with a machine, it is important to receive immediate feedback about the registration of an action (e.g. a button press). If this is not the case, such a human-computer dialog may fail or is at least annoying for the user, because temporal expectancies might be disturbed. To improve the acceptance of technical systems especially for elderly users it is of particular interest to determine the needs of users in such dialogs. In an fMRI experiment, we investigated the effects of delayed and omitted feedback on brain activation in comparison to immediate feedback in young participants. Based on these results we conducted a behavioral experiment determining the threshold for noticing a delayed feedback both in young and older participants. Methods: In the fMRI study, 13 participants had to perform an auditory categorization task. Independent of the correctness of the participants response they received in 76% of all trials an immediate visual feedback, in 12% a delayed feedback (500 ms) and in another 12% the feedback was omitted. In the behavioral study, 10 older and 14 young participants had to indicate whether they noticed a delayed feedback in a block of ten trials. Starting with a delay of 500 ms, the delay was adjusted in steps of 25 ms to determine the just noticeable delay of each subject. Results: In the fMRI study, omitted compared to immediate feedback activated a network of brain regions including the posterior medial frontal cortex, right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral anterior insula/ inferior frontal gyrus, which reflects attentional demand and adjustments in cognitive and action control. Unexpectedly, a short delay in feedback produced essentially the same pattern and degree of activation as the omission of feedback even in those subjects who reported not to have noticed the delay. In the behavioral study, we found a significantly (p < 0.01) higher threshold for the just noticeable delay in the older participants (299 ± 106 ms) compared to younger participants (184 ± 65.5 ms). Overall the threshold of a noticed delay was positively correlated with the number of mistakes in the auditory task (r = .64, p < 0.001). Conclusion: While the findings of the fMRI study emphasize the importance of immediate feedback in human-computer interaction, the behavioral results revealed great interindividual differences noticing such a delay. There seems to be a correlation between noticing a delay and age, as well as task difficulty. It will be of interest to find out if different delays have different effects on brain activity, especiall#y between younger and older participants.}, Year = {2010} } @misc{UDaOoFLtESBA, Author = {Kohrs, C. and Angenstein, N. and Scheich, H. and Brechmann, A.}, Title = {Unexpected Delay and Omission of Feedback Lead to Equally Strong Brain Activity}, howpublished = {Poster at the XII. When communicating with a machine, it is important to receive immediate feedback about the registration of an action (e.g. a button press). If this is not the case, such a human-computer dialog may fail or is at least annoying for the user. In the current study, we investigated the effects of delayed and omitted feedback on fMRI activation in comparison to immediate feedback. Participants performed an auditory categorization paradigm, in which they had to decide whether the pitch of frequency-modulated tones was rising or falling. Independent of the correctness of the participants response they received an immediate visual feedback in form of a green checkmark in 76\% of the cases. Thus, the feedback only indicated that a button press was registered. In 12\% of all trials, the feedback was delayed by 500 ms and in another 12% the feedback was omitted. Omitted compared to immediate feedback activated a network of brain regions including the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), bilateral anterior insula/ inferior frontal gyrus (aI/GFi) and inferior parietal lobe (Lpi). A decrease in activation was observed in the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex. The effects on activation in all these regions seem to be evoked by higher attentional demands and/or adjustments in action control. Unexpectedly, a short delay in feedback produced essentially the same pattern and degree of activation as the omission of feedback even in those subjects who reported not to have noticed the delay. This finding emphasizes the importance of immediate feedback in human-computer interaction. Furthermore, we observed specific modulation of BOLD response in the dorsal striatum and the ventral tegmental/substantia nigra which suggests that brain regions typically involved in reward processing are already activated by neutral feedback.}, Year = {2010} }
