ERASMUS SMS - SMP
In the framework of the LLP/ERASMUS program, there are two different grant and mobility schemes for students:
| Student Mobility for Studies (SMS) | Student Mobility for Placements (SMP) |
| To provide students with an international academic experience with respect to different teaching and study methods | To provide students with an international work experience in a professional environment. |
| Can only be carried out at higher education institutions (usually universities)
| Can be carried out in various types of enterprises and institutions.
|
| Participants have to sign a “learning agreement” | Participants have to sign a “training agreement” |
| Participants have student status at the host institution, i.e. they are registered (immatriculated), but do not have to pay tuition fees. | Participants have trainee status at the host institution. |
| Grants are lower, because students benefit from the host institutions services and infra-structure (i.e. student residences, student restaurants, bus passes, etc.) | Grants are higher, because trainees in enterprises have to find their own housing and pay regular prices for food and transportation. |
It is also possible to do a placement at an institute of a university and receive an ERASMUS SMP grant for this mobility. From our point of view, this is a special case, where the institute does not act as higher education institution (as in SMS), but as hosting enterprise (as an SMP). Consequently, procedures, services and support are different.
ERASMUS Placement (SMP) at Ulm University
It is of course possible to do a placement at an institute/department of Ulm University. However, students coming on an ERASMUS SMP grant cannot receive the same support and services by the International Offce as ERASMUS SMS students:
- we do not sign bilateral agreements for ERASMUS SMP
- SMP students are not registered (immatriculated)
- SMP students are not eligible to participate in the orientation program or language courses
- SMP students are not eligible to stay in a student residence nor can the International Office assist in finding private housing
Students wishing to carry out a placement at Ulm University have to contact the institutes/departments where they would like to work individually and apply for a "Praktikum". There is no formal application procedure.
If the student is accepted, the hosting institute/department must arrange for a placement contract with the human resource department.
All other arrangements have to be made by the student.

Clinical Electives
The Medical Faculty does not accept individual applicants for placements in one of the university hospitals for clinical electives or hospital rotations.
It is possible to do clinical electives or hospital rotations at Ulm University, however, only on the basis of an
ERASMUS SMS agreement.
