Extending Your Stay

Temporary non-degree students can be admitted to Ulm University for a period of max. 2 semesters. This status allows them not only to enroll in classes, but also to do a Bachelor or Master thesis here, but not to earn a Bachelor/Master degree from Ulm University.

Quite frequently, students decide to prolong their stay in Ulm. Extension of admission can be granted under the following conditions:

Extension of Stay

Extension for a Second Semester

Extension for a second semester

If you have originally been admitted for only one semester, you can easily get an extension for a second semester. All you need to do is:

  • Choose new courses for the second semester.
  • Make out a new learning agreement and list all the new courses as "added".
    • Erasmus+ and SEMP Students: Please use the form "During the Mobility" provided by your home university
    • Exchange Students and Free Mover: You may use our learning agreement modifications form
  • Have the new learning agreement signed by the responsible person at your home university and
    • the departmental Erasmus+ coordinator (Erasmus+ and SEMP Students)
    • the student advisor (Fachstudienberater) (Exchange Students and Free Mover)
  • Submit the new learning agreement to the appropriate contact person at the International Office.
  • Ask your home university to write a letter or an eMail to the appropriate contact person at the International Office, confirming that
    • they approve of your extension
    • that you will be given credit for your achievements during your second semester in Ulm
    • that you will remain a registered degree-student at your home university during the extension period.

We will then make out the documents that you need to re-register at Ulm University for your second semester.

Extension for a Third or Fourth Semester

Extension for a third/fourth semester:

We can normally grant admission as temporary non-degree student only for a period of up to two semesters. However, for students who wish to stay longer, e.g. to do their master thesis in Ulm, we can grant exceptions.

First you have to find a supervisor for your thesis and decide on a topic. Then ask your supervisor to send an eMail to the appropriate contact person at the International Office, confirming that

  • he/she has accepted you for a thesis project,
  • what the topic is going to be
  • when you are going to start and how long it is going to take.

In addition, you should

  • Make out a new learning agreement and list all the new courses as "added".
    • Erasmus+ and SEMP Students: Please use the form "During the Mobility" provided by your home university
    • Exchange Students and Free Mover: You may use our learning agreement modifications form
  • Have the new learning agreement signed by the responsible person at your home university and
    • the departmental Erasmus+ coordinator (Erasmus+ and SEMP Students)
    • the student advisor (Fachstudienberater) (Exchange Students and Free Mover)
  • Submit the new learning agreement to the appropriate contact person
  • Ask your home university to write a letter or an eMail to the appropriate contact person at the International Office, confirming that
    • they approve of your extension
    • that you will be given credit for your achievements during your second semester in Ulm
    • that you will remain a registered degree-student at your home university during the extension period.

We will then make out the documents that you need to re-register at Ulm University for your second semester.

Extension of a Thesis Project

Extension of thesis project

It sometimes happens that a thesis cannot be finished in the time originally allocated. In such cases, we can grant another extension for several weeks/months, but we need

  • an eMail from your thesis supervisor at Ulm University, stating the reasons for the extension and giving a date, by which it should be finished
  • an eMail from your home university, confirming that the extension is approved and by which time it must be finished at the latest (by the exam regulations of your home university).

Make sure these eMails are sent to the appropriate contact person at the International Office.

Extension of Housing

Extension of Housing

If your extension of admission has been approved, we can also inform Studentenwerk, that you are allowed to extend your stay in a student residence. If you started the extension procedure at an early point, there is a good chance that your room has not yet been rented out to a new student. In case you finish the procedures late, you may have to move to another room or even another residence. In case all rooms are booked out, you will have to find private accommodation yourself.

Please kindly understand that we cannot approve the extension of your room before the other formalities have been completed!
