We are happy to announce that the former Master in Finance student and also former program coordinator Maximilian Franke got awarded his doctoral degree!

After his studies, Max did his PhD at the Institute of Finance. During the four years that he was working as the coordinator of the Master in Finance program, he had a lasting impact on its continuous development.

Max's research focused on market efficiency and is divided into three papers: In his first paper, he examines whether it is possible to identify stocks that have an extremely good performance in the future. His second paper questions the common view that stock prices were too high during the dotcom bubble ending in 2000; the evidence is rather consistent with the view that the subsequent drop in prices was too large. Max's third paper discusses market efficiency on the soccer betting market.

Shiyuan Fan, who finished her Master degree in 2011, has won the first prize in this year’s Acatis Value Competition. The prize was awarded by the investment company Acatis for her master thesis. In the thesis, Shiyuan examined the performance of several stock selection strategies in emerging markets. A value strategy based on book-to-market ratios generates the highest returns. In terms of success, it is followed by strategies based on earnings-to-price ratios and analyst earnings forecast revisions. Momentum returns are smaller than in developed markets. No evidence of short- and long-term mean reversal is identified in this study.
