Master Programme in Molecular Medicine

Training Goal:

The Master Course of Studies “Molecular Medicine“ is based on a BSc degree in the field of life sciences, especially in Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Human Biology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biotechnology, Molecular Life Science, or Molecular Medicine. Students should deepen and broaden their knowledge in the molecular pathways leading to proliferation, differentiation and death of cells, in the physiology of cells and organs, the pathophysiology of diseases, as well as practical laboratory skills. With their Master Degree in Science graduates should be able to perform original scientific projects in the field of molecular medicine and to review and critically discuss published data related to this research area.

Structure of the Master Course of Studies “Molecular Medicine”:

The interdisciplinary Master Course of Studies “Molecular Medicine” comprises 1.5 study years (three semesters). All lectures, seminars and practical training courses are taught in English, all examinations are in English, too.

The first study year (semester 1 and 2) mainly consists of the module “Specific Aspects of Molecular Medicine”. This module contains a lecture series, seminars, and practical training. The lecture series and seminars concentrate on the various aspects of hematology and oncology, regenerative medicine, infectious diseases and immune reactions, neurobiology, and human genetics. The practical training is organized in four research courses à four weeks each, which can be chosen by the students out of forty courses. The first study year includes also a lecture and seminar dealing with clinical trials as well as management (project management, European patent law) and soft skill courses (good laborytory practice, bioethics, interpretation of scientific results). The first study year is finalized with a midterm examination. Depending on the grade of the midterm examination, highly motivated and qualified students can pass directly to the PhD Course of Studies to perform a “Fast-Track Promotion”.

In the third semester students concentrate on their thesis work. The MSc course of studies is completed with a disputation at the end of semester 3.
