EPIDEMIOLOGIC STUDIES OF MEDICAL PRODUCTS USING REGISTRIES AND HEALTHCARE DATABASES

Alan Brookhart

This course will provide an introduction to the conduct of non-experimental studies of medications and medical devices aimed at assessing their benefits and risks. The course will describe threats to validity of non-experimental studies, including confounding and selection bias and measurement error. Various design and analysis approaches to addressing these threats will be discussed, including the incident user and self-controlled designs, propensity score analysis and instrumental variable methods. The course will also review other topics in pharmaco-epidemiology, including studies of prescribing and medication adherence and provider profiling. Class sessions will involve both lectures and discussions of published papers.
