Admission Requirements
For international students:
A B.Sc. or B.Eng. (or higher degree) in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Engineering Science, or a closely related field.
For German students or foreign students with a German university degree:
A B.Sc., a B.Eng. (or higher degree) or a diploma from a Fachhochschule or Berufsakademie in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Engineering Science or a closely related field in one of the above subjects.
For all students:
Above-average performance in the completed degree; Proof of English knowledge; The willingness to work in a challenging, multi-cultural environment. Above average performance in a GRE or related test will increase the chances of admission.
Application Requirements
Your application will be evaluated once we have received the following:
- Fully completed Application Form by E-Mail.
- Fully completed and signed Application Form.
- Certified copies of your official transcripts from which your cumulative grade point average can be calculated. If your original transcripts are not in English or German, than a certified translation is also necessary.
- Two letters of reference from University teachers. Please include these letters, in separately sealed envelopes, with your application package. Please note: recommendations from company staff and other persons not affiliated with an University are not valid.
- APS Certificate for students from PR China.
Please note that you may apply even if you have not yet finished your bachelor's degree. In this case, you may send all available transcripts from which your current cumulative grade point average can be calculated. However, if you are admitted into the program, you will have to provide your completed transcripts as well as your bachelor's degree certificate in order to enroll in October. If you can not provide these documents, you will not be able to enroll, even if you have been admitted into the program.
Proof of English knowledge
Proof of English knowledge will be required by the time of enrollment in the form of one of the following:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test with a score of at least 570 (paper based), 88 (internet based), 230 (computer based). The Institution code is 8407.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test with a score of at least 6.5
- Graduation from a university or college where English was the primary language of instruction
- Native English speaker
If you have proof of English knowledge as stated above, please send it with your application.
You may also apply if you do not yet have the proof of English knowledge as stated above. However, if you are admitted into the program, you will have to provide proof of English knowledge in order to enroll in October. If you can not provide proof of English knowledge by October, you will not be able to enroll, even if you have been admitted into the program. Additionally, some German embassies will not issue a Visa until the TOEFL requirement has been met.
Further Application Procedure
Once your application has been received, it will be submitted to an Applications Committee. It is therefor not possible for us to tell you in advance what you chances of being accepted may be. If you feel that you meet the above requirements, then you are welcome to apply.
If the Applications Committee decides to admit you into the program, Ulm University will send a letter of admission (Zulassung) to you. This will be sent by regular post mail.
It is therefor extremely important that you provide your correct postal address when you fill out the application form.
The Letter of Admission may contain certain conditions. For example, "This admission is valid under the condition that you provide proof of English knowledge by the time of enrolment."
Please note that after you have been admitted into the program, you will be asked to make an advance payment of 102 EUR to secure a place in the program. This will be applied toward the 102 EUR Administration fees once you arrive. Additionally, you will be asked to make a 500 EUR deposit if you wish to reserve a room.

In addition, please send the whole application package per post mail as soon as possible. Please refer to the Application Form for more details. Application packages must be postmarked no later than April 30th 2010. If you have problems meeting this deadline, please let us know immediately.
Problems with the Application form
Problems can occur when opening the Application Form within some Internet browsers.
If you are experiencing problems opening the application form, please try clicking with the right mouse button on the link "Application Form". Select the option "Save Link As" and select the location on your hard drive to save the Application Form as a pdf file.
Next, close your web browser and open the Application Form with the newest version of Adobe Reader.
After filling out the form, save it again to your hard drive and then send it as an E-mail attachment to:
