Importance of floral scent in the pollination of Telipogon species

Sexually deceptive orchids have been documented in Asia, Australia, South Africa, South and Central America, and in Europe. However most of the researches have been performed in Europe and Australia, and there are only three confirmed cases of sexual deception in orchids from South America. It has been suggested that American orchids of the genus Telipogon may use pollination by sexual deception (van der Pijl and Dodson 1966, Christenson 1994, van der Cingel 2001, Gaskett 2011), but no conclusive evidence is available so far.

My Ph.D. thesis’ aims are to investigate the pollination ecology of Peruvian Telipogon species and the importance of floral scent in their pollination.  In order to answer the questions I am collecting floral scents and performing chemical and electrophysiological analyses. Thus, I intend to identify male attracting compounds. I also investigate if floral scents are involved in the floral isolation, avoiding interspecific-crossing among sympatric Telipogon species.
