To hike to this trestle we started out from south, where Interstate 8 crosses the railroad. We walked for hours with the railroad ahead winding around the mountain slopes in beautiful view. However, no sight at all of the trestle!

Finally, after a very long tunnel, where the railroad divided, we stood right in front of an abandoned tunnel and a newer curved tunnel. Here, we turned around, after all, we had to be back before sunset.

One year later, November 1998, we approached this trestle from north. 45 min cross country driving with a jeep, three hours walking and we finally made it! Well, at the southern end of the trestle, we walked a little bit further through a very short curved tunnel (visible on the picture to the immediate right of the trestle), perhaps about 40 yards. And here we were, what a surprise, right at the spot, we had turned around one year before.

I would recommend the southern approach, because the access by car is much easier and faster. But please be prepared, you won´t see a bit of that trestle until you literally stumble upon it!

This picture was taken in spring 1999 about 3 - 4 miles west of L54 looking east, from maybe 4000 - 5000 feet.  The runway (11/29) is obviously right in the middle of the picture, and the hot springs area is the dark area to the right of the runway at the base of the mountains.  The hot springs are about a mile south of the field and there are campsites there, but if I'm not mistaken the campground is typically closed from mid-June to mid-September.
