Selection Procedure

This module has been developed for the master students in CSE (Computational Science and Engineering) and international exchange students of related fields. Mathematics students who have attended the optional master module "Modellierung und Simulation in der Mechanik MSM" before and other students with equivalent knowledge are welcome if places (max. 12) are available.

In case there are more than 12 applicants, we will use the following algorithm to assign the available slots:

  • Students of the CSE masters program receive one point per master term
  • Students of the CSE masters program that have been rejected before get one bonus point per rejection
  • Any other students don't get any points (i.e. can only join if there are void places after assigning any CSE students)

After assigning the points to all students, we sort the list of applicants by score. The students with the 12 highest scores can join the course. Any remaining ambiguity (i.e. deciding what subset of students with the same score "win") will be decided by drawing lots.

Example 1 (assuming only 5 slots, for simplicity): Score table [4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0] -> students no. 1 - 7 draw lots (two blanks), students 8 - 11 are rejected immediately.

Example 2: score table [5, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 0, 0] -> students 1 - 4 can join the course, students 5 - 7 draw lots (2 blanks), students 8 - 11 are rejected immediately.

However, the most important first step is to come to the first lecture (2nd week) in order to apply for the attendance.
