What opportunities for online teaching does Moodle offer?

The starting point for online teaching is the mandatory learning platform Moodle. Provide all organisational information and all materials (e.g. scripts, literature, links) via Moodle. If you do not have a course yet, please apply for one here.

In any case you should avoid that students have to gather information about your course through many different ways. The publication of teaching material via TYPO3 is explicitly not intended. Please do not use your own online solutions.

Information on self-study via Moodle

  • Concrete ideas for use

    • Provide your students with materials: e.g. scripts, literature, slide sets, videos, links to relevant sources. Assign unique names to the materials and use the descriptions to give tips for a meaningful and goal-oriented use of the materials.
    • Include links to appropriate resources. Many materials (e.g. scripts, worksheets, videos, graphics, illustrations or even tests and entire learning modules) are freely accessible on different websites or platforms.
    • Via forums, students can clarify and discuss questions among themselves or with you. Moodleoverflow is a question-answer forum in which contributions are sorted according to their evaluation by the users. Thus, for example, a prioritization of contributions is possible.
    • Via questioning, test, lesson or H5P you can integrate playful elements and self-tests into your Moodle courses. 
    • Wiki, database and glossary enable you to work on and collect content with students.
    • Via tasks and student folders, students can submit exercises and other documents. Via the student folder these can also be made available to the whole course. Via the mutual assessment activity, students can evaluate each other's submissions.
  • Advantages

    Moodle offers many possibilities to accompany courses in a meaningful way and to stimulate self-learning activities. Most students already have experience in using Moodle. Content and activities can be presented in a very clear way.

    The forum announcements, which are automatically available in every course, are pre-set so that all messages from teachers are automatically sent to students via email. It is therefore not necessary to keep e-mail lists.

  • Challenges

    A short familiarisation period is necessary to get an overview of the available options and to select those that support your learning goals in a meaningful way.

    Learning materials and activities should be prepared in such a way that students can use them meaningfully. Therefore, please make sure that you always provide information on how to use them in the description or in text fields.

  • Effort

    Rather, it arises from the sensible selection of materials and activities. But because everything is in one place, there is no need to operate several systems.

    Before you create your own materials, we recommend that you first check whether there are already suitable resources for your user department. Many materials (e.g. scripts, worksheets, videos, graphics, illustrations or even tests and entire learning modules) are freely available on different websites or platforms. You can link to them from your Moodle course.

  • First steps

    Prerequisite for the access to Moodle is a kiz basic account. To offer courses in Moodle, lecturers of the University of Ulm need extended rights (role lecturer). Therefore, a separate application has to be submitted to the kiz. You can also use this form to request that courses be created for your courses.
