Question types: Overview

When you create a test activity in Moodle, you have a whole range of question types at your disposal for creating your test questions.

Here, we would like to give you an overview of these question types. You can also find examples of different question types, along with guidance on settings and use cases, in this downloadable overview.

Questions

Order
Put the randomly arranged terms in the correct order.

Calculated
Calculated questions are similar to numerical questions. However, the numbers are selected at random when the test begins.

Calculated multiple-choice question
Calculated multiple-choice questions can contain variables into which random numbers from the set of values are inserted when the test is run.

Drag-and-drop on image
Images or text are dragged onto drop zones on a background image.

Drag-and-drop onto text
Missing words in the question text are filled in using drag-and-drop.

Drag-and-drop markings
Markings are dragged and dropped onto a background image.

Simple calculation
Simple calculation questions are a simpler form of calculation questions, which contain numerical questions with interchangeable values. These values are selected at random from a list each time the test is run.

Free text
Allows for an answer consisting of a few sentences or paragraphs. This must be marked manually.

Short-answer
The answer is typed in by participants. For automatic marking, the entry is compared with model answers. Wildcards (placeholders) are permitted.

Fill-in-the-blank
question Questions of this type are very flexible. The text must be coded to create a gap in order to incorporate multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions or numerical questions.

Fill-in-the-blank selection
Missing words in the question text are filled in via drop-down menus.

Multiple-choice
Allows the selection of one or more answers from a predefined list.

Multiple Choice (OU)
A multiple-choice question with simplified marking rules.

Numerical
Allows a numerical answer (including units of measurement), which is assessed against a number of model answers, with tolerances where applicable.

True/False
In this question, only two answer options are presented for selection: "True" or "False".

Matching
The answer to each of the sub-questions must be selected from a list of options

Other

Description
A description is a text box that can contain a heading, instructions or explanatory text. Descriptions can be used to divide a test into logical sections. Descriptions are not answered and are not marked.
