MPK in the summer semester 2024

In the summer semester 2024, two MPK I as well as one MPK II course will be offered. The modules will take place on the following dates:

  • MPK I → Fri. 26. - Sun. 28.04.'24 (is cancelled)
  • MPK II → Fri. 28. - Sun. 30.06.'24

Ethics/Teaching qualification/professional in-depth study of educational sciences in the summer semester 2024

Two ethics seminars (the two bioethics courses are identical and can be attended on Mondays or Tuesdays, but not alternately) will be offered in the summer semester:

Personal Competence Module - MPK

“You only do a part-time job with permanent vacation” – prospective and experienced teachers are certainly confronted with such prejudices. But such statements fail to recognize the diverse challenges and pressures that high school and all other school teachers face and which they have to master: high workloads, the blurring of boundaries between public and private activities, the fundamental openness and openness of the activity, fulfillment of a wide variety of expectations, and the only limited opportunities to pursue a career.

Nevertheless, the teaching profession offers, like no other, the opportunity to implement and fulfill one's individual ideas about education and upbringing in the school setting. Motivation, attitude to the job and certain basic skills and abilities, in addition to specialist knowledge, are central characteristics of teacher suitability.

In the “Personal Competence Module” (MPK), which is structured in two parts, prospective teachers are given the opportunity to come into contact with experienced teachers, as well as teachers who are just beginning their professional lives, and to exchange experiences. The aim is to provide you with inspiration for the development of certain communication, action and social skills that will help you to meet the everyday challenges of school practice in a qualified manner.

Ethics

One of the fundamental questions of ethics is whether we are allowed to do what we want? – Ethics as a scientific discipline relates to morality(s) and their respective rules, values and norms in a problematizing, justifying and enlightening manner.

In terms of content, ethics asks about the good and the norms that can be derived from it for a successful individual and social lifestyle. So the question is: what should I do?

For this purpose, ethics provides reliable and universalizable assessment standards for moral actions in the everyday sense. Kant's categorical imperative is an example of this.

In addition to this general justification of morality in the sense of understanding ethical models, basic concepts and principles, their application to both our individual and collective actions and especially in relation to certain areas such as medicine, science, technology, the environment and the economy also plays a role decisive role.

Both the theoretical foundation of morality as “general ethics” and its application in “applied ethics” should be conveyed to you in our ethics seminars so that you can answer the question: What should I do? and perhaps even be able to answer them to some extent.

Ethics

General information

In addition to academic and technical training, the teacher training programme also includes the development of abilities and personal skills that are crucial for the teaching profession, such as personality development and the acquisition of behavioural and social skills.

For this purpose, a team of lecturers from various areas of pedagogical practice, from theatre pedagogy to grammar school practice, has been formed at the University of Ulm, which also integrates school law problems.

The two modules MPK I and MPK II, each worth 4 credit points, are compulsory as part of the teacher training programme (Bachelor/Master). The modules are not graded.

Learning objectives and content of the MPK modules

The MPK modules have the following learning objectives:

  •     Training personal posture and voice;
  •     Recognising and resolving communication blocks at school;
  •     Recognising and resolving conflict situations at school;
  •     Recognising different dimensions of pedagogical responsibility.

The MPK modules cover the following topics:

  •     Posture and voice training;
  •     Communication and interaction in the teaching profession;
  •     Conflict management in schools;
  •     Aspects of school law;
  •     Teacher responsibility and the ethos of the teaching profession.

 

General information

Information on the professional specialisation: Ethics at the University of Ulm

Ethics is an integral part of the educational sciences in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes for secondary school teachers. In both the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, seminars on ethics can be attended and credited as part of the module "Professional specialisation in educational sciences/ethics".

  •     The ethics seminars in the Bachelor's programme deal with basic ethical and philosophical issues (B.A.-BiWi-Ethics).
  •     The ethics seminars in the Master's degree programme deal with subject- or profession-specific questions (M.A.-BiWi-Ethics).

The performance records are graded and are included in the overall grade of the academic examination for the teaching profession with 4 CP. The following are regarded as performance assessments or examinations: Presentation, term paper, written examination.

Of course, the ethics seminars can also be recognised for all other students of all subject areas, e.g. ASQ, minor subject/applied subject philosophy, additional qualification, etc.

Learning objectives and content of the ethics seminars (B.A. and M.A./teaching degree)

The ethics seminars as part of the Bachelor's programme include the following learning objectives:

  •     Knowledge of basic ethical and philosophical questions and concepts
  •     Ability to deal with ethical and interdisciplinary issues in an exemplary manner
  •     Categorisation of ethical concepts in the respective historical context
  •     Sensitisation to ethical questions and problem horizons in the social, scientific and professional environment

The content of ethics seminars as part of the Bachelor's degree programme covers the following aspects:

  •     Basic conceptual distinctions in ethics
  •     Important theories and concepts of ethics
  •     Ethical dimensions and problems of science and research
  •     Introduction to specialised areas of applied ethics or area ethics

The ethics seminars as part of the Master's degree programme aim to achieve the following learning objectives:

  •     Ability to argue and make judgements in relation to exemplary ethical aspects in the individual subjects
  •     Expertise in dealing with questions of professional ethics

The content of ethics seminars in the Master's programme covers the following aspects:

  •     Basic approaches and methods of interdisciplinary applied ethics
  •     Ethical dimensions and questions of the respective subject in the context of area ethics
  •     Questions of professional ethics and ethical judgement
  •     Social significance of the respective subject
