Return, Overdue Fines, and Lost or Damaged Items

Book return

During opening hours you may return books at either the central library or the departmental library Helmholtzstraße. If you need to return books during closing hours, please use the after-hours book return box located in front of the central library’s main entrance.

Overdue fines

The Library charges overdue fines to encourage the timely renewal or return of library materials. The charge is per item and each fine accumulates over time until the item is renewed or returned: 1, 50 EUR – first fine + 5, 00 EUR – second fine + 10, 00 EUR – each subsequent fine. The library’s system is configured to automatically charge fines to accounts according to a predetermined schedule.

Lost or damaged items

Patrons bear the replacement cost for lost or badly damaged items. If material cannot be replaced or if the cost of repair would be disproportionate to the value of the item, a compensation fee will be charged. Compensation funds go towards purchasing other important material in the relevant scientific field.
