Server & Data
bwCloud SCOPE is a federated state service based on the virtualisation software OpenStack with operator locations in Mannheim, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Ulm. It provides virtual machines (servers) to members of teaching and research institutions in the state by way of self-provisioning and without a lengthy application process (Infrastructure as a Service - IaaS).
The central database service provides database servers for services of the kiz as well as for other users of the University of Ulm, which are operated with the database management system PostgreSQL. Typically, these databases are used as backend for web applications.
Institutes and other facilities of the University of Ulm have the possibility to house their own servers in an access-protected, monitored environment equipped with active cooling. The servers must be suitable for installation in 19-inch racks.
Authorised persons are given physical access to the server room with their chip card, e.g. to exchange hardware components or for maintenance purposes.
