Corona - Important Information for Researchers

For research projects in the university, including the pre-clinic, the following applies during emergency operation:

New research projects may not be started, experiments and other work must be ended or interrupted unless they can be carried out in home office (e.g. evaluations, preparation of publications, project proposals). Work that directly deals with the corona epidemic is excluded.

If an emergency supply of living organisms or the care of technical systems and long-term experiments in terms of maintenance and functional control are required on site, this must be done with minimal personnel expenditure. The persons required for this are to be named and require access authorisation.

Supporting institutions (e.g. the animal research center) also reduce their operations, insofar as this is possible with regard to a minimum supply of living organisms or under aspects of the safety of technical systems. This means in particular that no new breeds are created in the animal research center. The core facilities of the Faculty of Medicine shut down operations.

Research projects at the Medical Faculty and in the University Hospital

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ulm University is in emergency mode since Monday, March 23rd 2020, 6:00 p.m. This has drastic effects on planned and ongoing research projects:

New research projects may not be started, experiments and other work must be ended or interrupted unless they can be carried out in the home office (e.g. evaluations, preparation of publications, project proposals). This applies in particular to the following regulation

  • ongoing trials, especially animal experiments, must be ended
  • new experiments must not be started.

To implement these measures, a maximum of one employee per room or laboratory may work, in large laboratories a maximum of one employee per bench while observing the necessary protective measures/distance regulations. If necessary, work is done in shifts. As soon as the experiments are completed, employees will go to the home office.

To care for animals and cell cultures that cannot be preserved by freezing (primary cultures), an alternating emergency service, staffed according to competence, is set up. The persons responsible for these measures are to be named by the clinic director and require access authorization (please report to the building management of the hospital). Work that directly deals with the corona epidemic are exempt from these regulations.

New Research Projects

In the case of new projects, a written (or email) statement from the project management is required:

New industrial projects: Before signing, the project management has to make a statement whether they can carry out the projects in terms of the emergency operation that has been decided for an indefinite period of time or whether an extension, which may be necessary to achieve the project objectives, has been agreed in writing with the funding agency.

New publicly funded projects: The project management may ask Res.UL if and which information their provider of third-party funding has given about the project term and make a decision based on this information and the other general conditions (no new hiring, no procurement). In unclear cases, it is advisable to contact the respective third-party funding agency.

We continue to provide our services in supporting research applications. The contract lawyers also continue to work. Please send your contracts (Medical Faculty excluded) that require a signature in electronic form to F+EVertrag(at)uni-ulm.de or by post to Ulm University, ZUV Dez. I, Helmholtzstraße 16, 89081 Ulm. We will then arrange for the signature if the requirements are met. Please understand if there may be delays.
