Optoelectronics Laboratory Course
Optoelectronics is the key technology for applications like data communication over glass fibers or optical data storage on CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disk. Besides long distance data communication and local area networks, this technology is already heavily applied in data centers (e.g. Google data centers) and super computers. It will gain significant importance even for very short distance communications on circuit boards and in computer chips.
This lab course provides excellent opportunities to the participants to look into the fascinating microscopic world of laser diodes, optical wave guides, photo detectors, and optical data transmission systems. The lab course consists of seven half-day experiments which are explained in detailed manuals in English language. In order to prepare these experiments, the students are requested to study these manuals in-depth. It is absolutelky required that the students have knowledge from the lectures "Einführung in die Optoelektronik" or "Optical Communications".
With its focus on optical data communications and their components, this lab course is a perfect complement for students of the master course "Electrical Engineering" with focus on communications technology, hence it is also offered for students of the master course "Communications Technology".
List of Experiments
Protocols have to be written only for the experiments 2, 5 und 7. For all other experiments, the data evaluation and discussion of results will be done on-site in the lab after the experimental parts. No additional homework is then required.
This lab course will be offered in WS 2020/2021.
