Our research activities in the field of trauma focus on the development and application of innovative MRI-based imaging technologies, with particular emphasis on metabolic imaging and the development of mobile point-of-care MRI systems.
In the field of metabolic imaging, we focus on advancing hyperpolarized ^13C MRI and deuterium MRI for the noninvasive characterization of cellular metabolic processes. In the context of trauma-induced tissue and organ damage, particular attention is given to alterations in energy metabolism, tissue viability, and regenerative processes. Our goal is to establish quantitative imaging biomarkers for the early detection and characterization of primary and secondary tissue injury, as well as for monitoring therapeutic interventions.
Another major research focus is the development of compact, cost-effective, and mobile point-of-care MRI systems based on innovative low-field technologies. Our activities include novel magnet and RF coil concepts, acquisition strategies robust against electromagnetic interference, and efficient image reconstruction methods. The long-term objective is to enable MRI examinations directly at the bedside, in intensive care units, and in other clinical environments with limited imaging infrastructure.
By combining metabolic imaging with innovative MRI system technologies, we aim to establish new approaches for the noninvasive, quantitative assessment and longitudinal monitoring of trauma-induced tissue and organ injury and subsequent recovery.
