In the area of quantum science, the Centre for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology IQST (in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research) constitutes an internationally recognised platform featuring members from a variety of disciplines, including chemistry, engineering and mathematics.

CRC/TRR 21 brings together researchers from the Universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen and Ulm, who collaborate in the field of manipulating and controlling complex quantum systems. The first substantial strengthening of the key research area was achieved by appointing Prof Dr Martin Plenio, who was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt professorship worth € 3.5 million in 2009.

Prof. Dr. Martin Plenio also coordinates the EU project HYPERDIAMOND, which is a research and innovation project aiming at developing a new technology for improving medical imaging, in particular the imaging of targeted molecules and processes in vivo.

In 2011, Prof. Dr. Fedor Jelezko was awarded a W3 professorship from the Carl Zeiss Foundation’s programme for the Promotion of University Research Structures. This professorship, established in the field of hybrid quantum systems, also acts as a bridge between solid-state/atomic physics and electrical engineering. Additionally Prof. Dr. Fedor Jelezko und Prof. Dr. Jörg Wrachtrup (University of Stuttgart) won the prestigious ZEISS Research Award 2016.
