Mesoscopic Josephson junctions are the central building block for superconducting quantum devices. Their functionality is used to unlock a wide range of quantum technologies, from sensing the smallest signals in nature, down to the fundamental quantum limits, to generating large scale quantum coherent states in circuit chips for quantum information processing.
Our group tackles some of the most challenging open problems in mesoscopic Josephson junctions by studying their functionality together with the properties of the electromagnetic environment present in the real circumstances of the laboratory. Together with world-leading experimental collaborators at the Max Plank Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart we have successfully advanced the current understanding of transport in tunneling superconducting junctions operated at milliKelvin temperatures, the Josephson effect in atomic superconducting contacts, and the superconducting tunneling between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov resonances localized by single-atom impurities.
