Blends of oligothiophenes allow for tuning of the energy levels

Ulm University

Oligothiophenes with different number of thiophene rings show in blends tunable energy levels in dependency of the mixing ratio. The group of Prof. Leo, TU Dresden, found that the shift of the electron affinity and ionization potential is based on the change of the dielectric constant when a terthiophene (3T) is mixed with a quinquethiophene (5T) or a sexithiophene (6T) in various ratios. The remarkable results are described in a new publication with the title „Band gap engineering in blended organic semiconductor films based on dielectric interactions” which just was published online in Nature Materials 2021, doi.org/10.1038/s41563-021-01025-z.
