The Institute for Experimental Physics, group of Prof. Othmar Marti seeks a candidate (f/m) for a
PhD position (50%)
limited to three years, available now.
„Optical stretcher for adherent cells: From single cells to tissue“
Adherent cells are ubiquitous, from skin to lung tissue to bone surfaces, to name a few. Different functionalities in cells and/or malignant modifications of them are correlated with changed mechanical properties. Mechanical diagnostics of cells is often possible without using fluorescent markers, thus avoiding some interference with the native functionality.
In this thesis, the successful candidate will work with cells and tissues provided by different collaborators in Ulm (University and Medical School) or beyond. The existing stretcher will be optimized and adapted to the open research questions of the different collaborations. It is expected, that the candidate works on the improvement of the setup as well as on the improvement of the analysis algorithms and implement and devise new algorithms.
The open position comprises a mandatory teaching load of 2 SWS.
The salary for the part time position is 50 % of the salary according to TV-L E13.
The candidate will have the possibility to apply to the Graduate School “Pulmosens” (joint school of medical School, Engineering, Chemistry and Physics).
We are searching for a candidate with a very good knowledge of optics, a flair for measurements and good abilities in mathematical modelling and processing. Good knowledge of biophysics is desirable.
The University of Ulm is committed to increase the share of women in research and teaching positions and therefore explicitly encourages female candidates to apply.
Comprehensive applications, including CV and Certificates, have to be sent in written or in electronic form by March 23rd, 2018 to
