The project aims at development of an system-on-chip solution for the UMTS base station. University of Ulm contributed to the project on the system level by developing 3 ASICs 

UMTS is one of the major Third Generation mobile communication systems being developed within the framework defined by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and known as IMT-2000. Among the main features of the 3G systems are the high data rates up to 2 Mbps, high spectrum efficiency, and the world-wide use for all mobile applications.

With these features, UMTS is expected to be the future system for mobile Multimedia services. An advanced implementation of the UMTS features in hardware poses new challenges to the semiconductor technologies to be used for realization, like:

  • Realization of extreme dynamic range of up/down converters on a single die of Silicon Germanium (SiGe) requires further integration of passive components.
  • Implementation and test of useful functional blocks requires finding new circuit concepts not used till now.
