Information Needs in Highly Automated Driving

The aim of this thesis is to investigate which information needs there are in the case of highly automated driving when no actual involvement of the human driver is needed. A related work research should be conducted and interdisciplinary, learning psychological, didactic and information science approaches should be considered.

A virtual reality prototype should be designed and implemented that investigates several of these aspects. Finally, the defined hypothesis should be evaluated by conducting a study.

External Communication in Highly Automated Driving

Description:

The aim of this thesis is to investigate what kind of information should be provided to the external participant in such a socio-technical system and how to do this. Catching Pedestrian’s Attention

Description: The aim of this thesis is to investigate how to catch the attention of a pedestrian that is currently being distracted (headphones, smartphone, taking photos,...). Investigating Tablet and Pen-Based Virtual Reality In Situ Authoring for the Education of Urban Rainwater Management

Description: The aim of this thesis is to design and create with a game engine a tablet and pen-based virtual reality in-situ authoring application that could be used by lecturers to design immersive urban rainwater management scenarios. It will be based on the publication VRSketchIn. The focus will be on the iterative development of an interaction design concept by using a user centered design process. The implemented application should be evaluated in a usability study.

VRSketchIn++: Extended Exploration of the Design Space of Pen and Tablet Interaction for 3D Sketching in Virtual Reality

Supervisor: Tobias Drey

Description: The aim of this thesis is to extend VRSketchIn and explore the design space further. The following research topics are possible:

• Improve the existing interaction metaphors based on the previous study findings and evaluate them further (e.g., mental load, frequent metaphor switch, …).

• Investigate a selected interaction metaphor group in detail, define use cases, and perform an evaluation.

• Extend VRSketchIn for Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) and develop appropriate interaction metaphors.

The application will be implemented with Unity, an HTC Vive Pro, and OptiTrack. A user-centered design process shall be conducted as well as a usability study.

Investigating the Influence of Locomotion Methods in Virtual Reality on Spatial Orientation and Perspective Taking

Description: The aim of this thesis is to create a game engine based virtual reality application and compare with it in a study several locomotion metaphors regarding their influence on spatial orientation and perspective-taking. These findings should be correlated with the spatial abilities of the study participants. The implemented locomotion metaphors should be selected based on a proper classification as well as findings from related work.

Multimodal Messenger - Receiver-centered communication

Beschreibung: Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit soll ein Multimodaler Messenger prototypisch implementiert werden. Dieser soll es dem Empfänger von Nachrichten ermöglichen, die Modalität (Text, Sprache, ...) zu wählen, welche zu seinem Nutzungskontext am besten passt. Die Akzeptanz und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten eines solchen Messenger sollen evaluiert werden.

Mobile Auditory Augmented Reality - Voice Interfaces in the wild

Beschreibung: Durch die fortschreitende Miniaturisierung von CPU, Speicher und weiteren elektronischen Bauteilen ist man zukünftig in der Lage einen ganzen Rechner im Ohr zu tragen. Das hat vielfältige Vorteile: Informationen können dem Nutzer jederzeit von der Außenwelt unbemerkt zugänglich gemacht werden, eine Sprachschnittstelle ist permanent verfügbar und somit ist auch eine Kommunikation mit persönlichen Kontakten möglich.

Mouthing during messaging - Emotional chatting with smartphones

Beschreibung: Während dem Schreiben von Nachrichten, kann bei vielen Personen sogenanntes „mouthing“ beobachtet werden. Dabei werden geschriebene Worte stumm mitgesprochen. Ähnliches passiert auch beim Lesen von Nachrichten. Der Empfänger einer Nachricht zeigt unbewusst seine Emotionen und grinst z.B. in sein Smartphone.

Effects of Holographic Displays in Automated Driving

The goal of this thesis is to design, implement, conduct and evaluate a driving simulator experiment with a holographic display. The research question is, does a technical mature appearance has an influence on trust, certainty and usage of the automation.
