Dr.-Ing. John G. Kauffman

John Gabriel Kauffman received his B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester Ma. USA in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In 2009 he furthered his studies at University of Ulm, Germany, receiving his Dr.-Ing degree in 2013 with highest honors.

From 2005 to 2008 he worked at Analog Devices, Wilmington, Ma, in the MEMS division on automotive grade accelerometer products. His work consisted of design verification in Cadence, design and development of bench capabilities in Labview for evaluating ASIC products, and initial evaluation of first silicon at the wafer level. From 2008 to 2009 he worked at Linear Technology Munich, Germany in the DC/DC design group designing and developing voltage-mode buck-boost and current-mode buck DC/DC converters.

In 2009, he started at the University of Ulm in the field of continue time delta sigma modulator design. During his time in Ulm, he published at ISSCC and JSSC twice each, resulting in state-of-the-art ADC designs in 2011 and 2012. His Ph.D thesis was awarded the Promotionspreise from the University of Ulm in 2015.

After receiving the Dr.-Ing degree in 2013, he joined Intel GmbH Munich Germany as a project technical leader and became an Intel member of technical staff designing receiver ADC’s for Intel’s LTE products. While at Intel, he designed three different multi-mode continuous time delta sigma ADCs in 28nm CMOS. The first design was sold in the XMM7360 platform which shipped in high volumes in the iphone 7/7+. The second design is in the XM7480 platform which shipped in high volumes in the iPhone 8/8+/X. And the third design is in the IBIS platform which is shipped in high volumes in the Apple watch 4. In the development for these three product ADCs he received 5 US granted patents off the implemented designs.

In 2017 he left Germany to join Nokia Networks in Silicon Valley Ca. USA as a technical leader for TX DAC design. After completing the TX DAC design, later in that year, he was promoted to R&D Manager for 5G RFIC design and was responsible with design, tape-out and delivery of a 4T4R 5G sub 6GHz transceiver for in-house platforms. While at Nokia, he did not only manage the team, but was also heavily involved in circuit design and chip concept designs.

Since 2019 Dr. Kauffman has returned to the University of Ulm as an "Akademischer Rat" to further research is ADCs, DACs and other mixed signal architectures for 5G and further upcoming standards.
