Lipid Monolayers

Idea: Using molecular self assembly we learn how to produce
monomolecular films and layered structures

Overview

Lipid monolayers of arachidic acid are created on a liquid subphase. The critical surface pressure and the molecular cross section of arachidic acid are determined.

Langmuir-Blodgett films consisting of layers, doped with FRET donor (oxacarbocyanine), acceptor (thiacarbocyanine) and interjacent undoped layers are transferred on glass slides.

For some slides with different spacing between donor and acceptor layer, the quenching of donor fluorescence is measured in order to study the distance dependence of FRET.
