AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy)

In this lab course we learn how AFM experiments can be used to investigate the local mechanical properties of cells.

Biophysics Lab Course, Institute of Biophysics, Ulm University

Overview

Topography and local stiffness of fixed mouse fibroblasts (cell line NIH/3T3 ATCC) is investigated with an atomic force microscope in force-volume mode.

Young’s modulus of the cells is determined and compared to cells, which were previously treated with cytochalasin D, a fungal toxin that inhibits actin polymerization and elongation.
