Institute of Protein Biochemistry

In 2012, the institute was established under the Director Prof. Dr. Marcus Fändrich. Its research as well as its teaching duties are at the interface between biology, chemistry, physics and medicine with the main focus being on protein biochemistry.

Major techniques used at our institute are the recombinant expression and purification of proteins, the biophysical characterization of protein conformations, electron and fluorescence microscopy as well as cell biology.

Our institute is located within the Zentrum f. Biomedizinische Forschung Helmholtzstraße 8/1

Information concerning the

5. Ulm Meeting on "Biophysics of Amyloid Formation"

16 - 18 February 2021, Ulm University, Germany

We currently prepare the meeting. Due to the COVID-19 pandemie we have not openend the registration and advertised this event. Hopefully we can start the registration until end of June 2020.

Further information:

The 4th Ulm Meeting "Biophysics of Amyloid Formation" with a keynote lecture of Per Westermark, Uppsala University Sweden, 28 speakers, more than 50 poster presentations and about 130 registered participants from 22 countries, was successfully held at Ulm University.

It is with great sadness that the Institute learned of the death of Chris Dobson on 8 September 2019, aged 69. He was one of the most respected scientists in the field of amyloid research and a great inspiration to all of us. A tribute of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and an online book of condolence can be found here:

The German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) will fund a nation-wide Research Unit (FOR 2969) to investigate the mechanisms of protein misfolding in systemic AL amyloidosis (speaker Marcus Fändrich). Partners of the consortium will come from Munich, Heidelberg, Erlangen and Kiel.

The 3rd Ulm Meeting "Biophysics of Amyloid Formation" with a keynote lecture from David Eisenberg and 100 registered participants from 22 different countries and four continents was successfully held at Ulm University.
