    • Scope of the program: Scientific principles, experimental research, analytical methods and applications in the interdisciplinary fields of chemical engineering and energy technology
    • Emphasis on lab work: Students get trained in conducting scientific experiments, recording and analyzing experimental data.
    • Independent research project: For completion of the program students work independently on an experimental master´s thesis project in an area/institute of their choice.
    • Multidisciplinarity: The master program aims at getting together students, teachers and researchers from different disciplines in natural sciences and engineering science.

     Educational requirements to be met by future students:

    • Solid undergraduate education in mathematics and physics  and chemical engineering
    • Willingness to close potential gaps in basic knowledge in mathematics and natural sciences  quickly. Students will attend demanding intensive courses that summarize basics and lead to advanced topics fast.

  • Aims and Syllabus

    • The master’s programme in Chemical Engineering is a research-oriented programme. It aims to deepen and complement the scientific and methodological qualifications acquired in the bachelor’s programme. The programme objective is to convey knowledge and skills to the students that enable them to independently work on complex problems in chemical and process engineering applying scientific methods and to thus qualify them for work in research, science, development and application in the industry, higher education and research institutes. In particular, the master’s degree qualifies graduates for doctoral studies.

    Premaster Course for Master programmes – Faculty of Natural Sciences

    The Ulm University focuses on life sciences, bio- and nanotechnologies as well as on energy conversion and storage. It has constantly obtained a high ranking for its academic research and quality of teaching. To improve the academic formation of its future graduates, our university offers a preparatory course for international students seeking admission in one the following English-taught master programmes: Advanced Materials, Biology, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering and Energy Science & Technology.

    Each year we bring together very motivated and talented international students from different areas of Natural Sciences and Engineering. We want to ensure that all students start our programmes at the same level and will complete their master programme successfully. The pre-master course is for exceptional students wishing to get admission to one of our programmes, but appearing to have insufficient knowledge or skills in some particular areas. You would like to join an interdisciplinary master and have a deep knowledge in a particular subject but you are still missing the basics of another one? This preparatory course is designed to give you confidence and enough academic skills to ensure that you will hit the ground running and make the most of your master.

    Purpose and Objectives

    During the premaster course you enhance your knowledge in physics, biology, chemistry and/or mathematics depending on the programme you applied for. Your practical training starts in physics, chemistry or biology in a state-of-the-art lab environment. Moreover, you will have enough time to get used to the life in a foreign country, before starting the full-time master programme. Parallel to the pre-master course there will be some intercultural activities intended to help you with the new environment and integration.

  • Financial Issues

    Tuition Fees are only applicable for second degree and international students. Further Infomation can be found here. Additionally the university and the students union (Studierendenwerk Ulm) currently charge administrative fees approximately amounting to 165 € each semester. Students admitted to the "Chemical Engineering" programme will be asked to pay these fees for the following winter term immediately after they accepted admission.

    Living expenses
    A student at Ulm University will face the following living expenses :
    •    University/students union administrative fee: ~165 € each semester
    •    Health insurance: 80 € each month
    •    Rent: approximately 300 € each month
    •    Public transportation (semester ticket): 115 € each semester
    •    General cost of living (depending on the lifestyle): approximately 300 € each month
    Expenses per year: Approximately 8700 €
    Expenses for the regular duration of the programme (2 years): Approximately 17 400 €

    Financial Assistance
    Information on scholarship programs can be found at the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD). Typically, students will have to apply for a scholarship one year ahead of time. Ulm University does not offer any additional scholarships for incoming students.

    Proof of Financial Resources

    Typically, proof of financial resources of at least 700 € per month will be necessary to obtain a student visa. Additionally, many German embassies require students to prove that they dispose of a specific amount of money (approx. 8000 €) on a German bank account before a visa will be issued. Please inquire at the German embassy in your country for specific requirements.

  • Housing

    Students admitted to the programme are advised to book a room in a student dormitory. This request is a part of our Acceptance letter.

    There are four dorms downtown (25 min bus drive to the campus) and one near the campus (walking distance). All rooms are one person rooms and fully furnished. You share kitchen (with all cooking facilities) and bathroom with a few persons; according to the type of dorm this can be 2 to 12 persons. There are no dorms exclusively for men or women, however some appartments may be women only.

    Academic Requirements MSc programme “Chemical Engineering":

     

    1.    Proof of a bachelor's degree with examination results in the study course chemical engineering or any other programme with essentially the same content at any higher education institution in Germany or abroad or any degree recognized as equivalent awarded after a minimum of three years of study.

    2.    Examination results must comply with one of the following criteria final grade of the bachelor's degree of 2.5 or better, or if the degree has not yet been completed examination results showing an average of 2.5 or better by the application deadline. Fundamental skills in natural sciences, materials science and/ or engineering sciences Applicants who do not fulfill the above-average grade and hold a bachelor's degree with an overall grade of 3.3 or better have to provide their qualification for this master's programme by an admission examination. This also applies if the bachelor's programme has not yet been completed and the examination results show an average of 3.3 or better by the application period.

    3.    Fundamental skills in natural sciences, materials science and/ or engineering sciences*

    4.    Good English proficiency

    English language competence at Level C 1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL; min 95), through the IELTS (min. 7.0) or any comparable proof.No test needed by native speakers.

    * These essential skills may be gained by passing the pre master course offered by Ulm University.

    Documents you have to submit via regular mail: 


    a)      Cover sheet of online registration with date and your signature in handwriting.
    Important: Your application is not valid without your signature on all documents that are asked to be signed: (a), b), d); see below)!

    b)      Application form: Hardcopy of completed form, signed on bottom of page 5.

    c)      Transcripts of records for all semesters/terms of the bachelor program. Information entered in the application form has to be retrievable on the transcripts. Please highlight information on the grading system stated on the transcript.

    d)      Curriculum vitae: Your CV has to be complete (no gaps, has to cover time since bachelor graduation). It mustn´t be longer than two pages (important!) and has to carry your name and application number on top, your signature on the bottom.

    e)      Bachelor degree certificate with final bachelor grade.

    f)      Score report of English test (IELTS of TOEFL, copy) meeting our standards (for details check “Admission Requirements”

    g)       APS-certificate (original): Has to be provided by students from PR China/       Vietnam/ Mongolia only.

  • After Admission

    Most foreign students have to apply for a student visa at the German Embassy in their home country. German Immigration Law does not allow to change the Immigration status whilst in Germany; don`t enter with a tourist visa !

    As soon as you know about your admission make an appoinment at the nearest embassy or consulate. Go there immediately after receiving the admission letter. Be aware that the visa procedure will take several weeks (up to 3 months). The embassy will inform you about the details of your visa application. Usually you have to present the following at the Embassy:

    1. our letter of admission (Zulassung)
    2. our Information for the Embassy
    3. a proof of your financial means (700 Euro/month at the least). Be prepared to show a bank statement covering the full expenses of the first year
    4. in addition to the above the respective embassy may require you to submit additional material - check with your nearest German embassy

    Services and assistance

    Together with the admission letter you will receive detailed information on services we provide. We will assist you in finding housing, i.e. we will make reservations in the students' dormitories.
    Upon arrival a senior student will meet and assist you during your first hours on foreign terrain. You will soon meet your new classmates and become familiar with your new surroundings.

  • Bachelor graduates Chemical Engineering of Ulm University

    If you received your bachelor´s degree in chemical engineering from Ulm University, you need not apply for the study programme. You apply for change of degree programme in the student administration and examinations office (Studiensekretariat) as soon as you have completed your bachelor´s programme and thus comply with access conditions according to the admissions statutes (grade of bachelor´s degree: 2.5 or better; if the grade of the bachelor´s degree is 2.6 - 3.3: invitation to admission interview; adequate English skills).
